The first 60 minutes following
a trauma incident are vital.
A trauma victim's chances of survival are greatest if they receive care at a trauma center within the first hour after a severe injury. Survivors who receive treatment during that first 60 minutes are also more likely to recover more quickly and have fewer long-term effects.
Emergency medical service (EMS) and medical professionals refer to this critical time as the “
Golden Hour.”
The county’s EMS teams have the resources to respond quickly, but in the case of patients needing care from a trauma center, long travel distances from the site of injury can make it a challenge. Chester County residents have a 15- to 20-minute longer average travel time to a trauma center than residents in nearby counties. In fact, Chester County’s current 70- to 75-minute average time between injury and trauma center admission is well above the Golden Hour standard.
